May 1st, or May Day, is International Workers Day
This day is meant to celebrate 100+ years of the labor movement and its effort to improve workers’ conditions across the globe. Around the mid-late 1800s, with the growth of the Industrial Revolution, movements across the world advocated for an 8–10-hour workday versus the 10–16-hour workdays that many were working at the time. Movements also called for safer working conditions and the same pay for fewer hours. Over time, the labor movement helped create paid holidays, an 8-hour workday, and a 5-day workweek. Many workers worldwide reap the benefits the labor movement fought so hard for.
May Day has become a symbol for workers’ rights worldwide and is celebrated by many countries. In the US and Canada, a similar observance known as Labor Day is celebrated.
